Maternal Health and Mobile Technology
Health
A prevention project to improve the health of mothers and babies that enabled traditional midwives to supervise prenatal consultations of local pregnant women and to ensure that babies developed properly during the gestation period. This project was implemented in the municipalities of Calukembe and Matala within the provinces of Bié, Huambo and Huíla and benefitted from the technical collaboration of traditional midwives and community agents. The Provincial Directorate of Health (DPS) played an important role in monitoring all records of daily, monthly and annual deliveries.
The mHealth programme targeted pregnant women in peri-urban areas who received educational messages via mobile phone and through written messages on how they should take care of newborn babies under the supervision of trained traditional midwives.
The project was devised and implemented by People In Need (PIN).
